Art Deco Pin Egyptian Revival Isis Scarab Snake Antique Brooch
This large and very unique Egyptian Revival brooch dates from the 1895-1910 Art Nouveau era. This is not a reproduction brooch : it is an antique original.
The brooch is made of thick and solid cast brass and the impressive layered design features a large domed pink Peking glass cab at the center. The top and bottom have long winged Isis designs. At the sides are Art Nouveau scrolls, scarab beetles, and snakes.
Isis was regarded as the Eye of Ra and was worshipped as the "Great of Magic" who protected her son Horus from snakes, predators and other dangers; thus she would protect mortal children also.
This sash brooch is very impressive in size and weight. It measures 3 1/4" wide x 2 1/8" tall and weighs 43 grams. The Peking glass dome is 3/4" wide and is bezel set. You can get a better indication of the size by looking at the photo of the brooch in my hand.
The back of the brooch has the original tube hinge, brass bar pin and C Clasp ; all in fine working order. The brass has an aged patina and there is no dirt or grime. The back is smooth brass with an aged patina as well. The brooch is in superb condition with the exception of two slight flaws. One scarab has a ding or wear mark on the head area. The bezel on the glass cab has a small imperfection in the solder. The Peking glass cab is perfect with no scratches, scuffs, chips, or cracks.
I have only lightly cleaned this brooch with a jewelers gold polishing cloth. I have not used any cleaners or chemicals and in the close up photos, you can see some microscopic grime deep in the crevices. The brooch is not signed but it was most likely made in Europe; Czechoslovakia or France perhaps.
You can add a gold brooch slider to convert this pin to a pendant by checking the box below. Sliders come with a pair of silicon stoppers to hold slider in place.
