Made in the Far East in the 1920-1930 era, this exceptional hand carved lady face pendant is probably one of a kind. Im certain it was not a mass-produced item.

The lady is made of genuine Tortoise shell with engraved Oriental details on the front, or in the lady's hair. The face is hand carved and hand painted Mother of Pearl. The tortoise shell is a double layer with the front and back sections laminated together. The Mother of Pearl is not sandwiched between the two tortoise shell layers. The tortoise shell area on the front is carved in a tear drop shape and the MOP lady face is precisely carved to match the curve; on the same plane.

The front of the pendant is not flat and is slightly domed. The bail is hand carved tortoise shell; not applied, but a hand carved part of the back tortoise layer. So, how do you know when tortoise shell is old? Old tortoise shell has a smooth glazed patina much like the difference between regular glass and beach glass.

Medium in size, the pendant is 1 5/8" long x 1 1/8" tall or 41 mm x 28 mm. The pendant comes with a new antiqued silver metal necklace chain 24" or 61 cm long. The pendant is in pristine clean condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no scratches, chips, or cracks front or back. The pendant is not signed.
