Hawaiian Flower Earrings Carved Ivory Bone 1960s Vintage Jewelry

Hand Carved in Hawaii in the 1960s, you might think these earrings are elephant ivory. They look almost identical to real ivory but they are carved fish bone and are a brighter shade of white than ivory.

Most old ivory jewelry tends to have a yellow or tan look, but these earrings are eggshell white. The earrings are not cow bone, which can also be slightly tan or brown. Fish bone has a glossy bright white appearance and tight molecular structure. A resonance ping test also indicates they are not dense and weighty like cow bone as the earrings have a high pitch resonance.

This may sound complicated to assess a pair of vintage earrings but it is important because there are very few places in the world where jewelry artisans made jewelry from fish bone; a very preferable type of bone as it is light weight, glossy, and not dingy yellow or brown. Some cow bone if bleached can be bright white, but it is extremely dense with a large molecular structure, a deep resonance pitch, and is never glossy unless coated with resin.

The earrings are made for pierced ears and the flower design looks like that of thunbergia fragrans, or the White Lady flower. The earrings are large, about the size of a US silver dollar, or 1 3/8" or 35 mm wide.

Both earrings are in spectacular pristine microscopically clean condition with no imperfections or flaws. New ear studs have been added for you (not in photos).

Comes gift wrapped and shipped in a new presentation jewelry box.
