Old Silhouette Picture German Original Hansel and Gretel 1930s
This is a very rare to find original old silhouette picture. It is a real silhouette and not a print of a silhouette or a reproduction. It has been in my home for many decades.
This is a long, tall silhouette framed picture that at first, looks like a evergreen tree, a cottage, and a little girl playing in the woods. However, this is a child's story depiction of Hansel and Gretel. If you look closely you can see the ornate cottage with stars and hearts is a gingerbread cottage and at the bottom left corner is a paddle sticking straight up. That paddle is a dough paddle and the domed object with something sticking out is the witch being pushed into the oven.
This silhouette is very old and was most likely made in the late 1930s or early 1940s right after the story was first adapted for television by the BBC, who broadcast it on December 23, 1937.
As I come from a long line of Germans this silhouette was most likely made in Germany or somewhere in Europe and not the US. The silhouette is under glass and the frame and glass are both all original. I have never taken it apart to clean the back side of the glass so there is some light dust on the back of the glass. The specks of dust you see are most likely on the back of the glass and not on the paper.
The silhouette is in excellent condition with no imperfections or flaws. The original wood frame is light yellow, black, and silver paint and has light wear commensurate with age. The back has the original old brown paper tape and some newer masking tape. The frame is in great shape with the exception of a ding in the paint on the lower right corner.
Medium large in size, the picture with frame is 12 3/8" tall x 6 1/2" wide or 31.5 cm x 16.5 cm.
