Dont ask me why- but I've had a thing for fancy glass and crystal candy dishes for over 50 years. I think its because my grandmother always had several, loaded with candy. From the time I was old enough to reach it on the table, those glowing orbs of light always fascinated me. I never have a problem selling them because the great ones I've collected are very hard to find today.
This glass pattern has several names. It is called Kings Crown, Excelsior, or Ruby Thumbprint and was made by US Glass (Adams Factory) in 1891. This exquisite footed and wide FLUTED candy dish is has the very desirable Cranberry stained rim.
However, I cant rule out that this pattern wasn't also made in the 1950s by other companies. Im fairly certain this compote was made by Adams Glass in 1891 and I'll tell you why.
The real problem in dating the age of this piece is that even serious collectors dont know if this particular style of candy dish was made by anyone in the 1940-1950 era, or if it was only made by Adams Glass in 1891. You can search the internet for ages and not find another bowl for sale this style by any maker. Other fluted styles in the 1940-1950 era were much different.
But, the 1891 Adams glass is supposed to fluoresce under black light. I tested it in the dark with a black light and while it didnt glow green all over and light up like most heavy uranium glass does, there are some shimmers of glowing green. While there's not enough uranium to make it light up like a Christmas tree, there are some hints of uranium in the glass.
What should be noted is: Its not WHO made this candy dish or when. It's the fact that a ruby thumbprrint fluted candy compote this style that's rare to come by. I believe it could be 1950s Westmoreland Glass. This bowl needs a lover. It has been stored away its' whole life and has never been used. This bowl is so delicious is needs to be filled with after dinner mints or ribbon candy for special guests. It will be the perfect compliment for any table and will most certainly receive many compliments.Large in size, the bowl is about 5 1/4" tall x 8" wide or 13 cm x 20 cm. The entire bowl is in pristine clean like new condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no scratches, scuffs, chips, or cracks. The glass is brilliant clear and flawless.
