Made in the 1950s, this is a very impressive rare brooch. This unique unsigned design was made by D&E for Weiss. The long slender faceted navettes are loosely called Hematite but it is faux Hematite as the navettes are black glass with a high polish deep steel-grey mirror finish. This technique was something D&E was noted for but did not make in great abundance and is rarely found today. The brooch is two spiral layers and the flower design at the center is accomplished with the navettes upwards on a 45 degree angle. At the center is a deep grey crystal chaton and all of the cabs are prong set. The brooch is made of superb quality silver rhodium metal. Look at the back of the brooch and you can see the exceptional soldered craftsmanship. I love the look of this brooch because it is not an extremely fancy D&E piece. It is one that can be worn every day, for more casual occasions, or dressed up and worn on any color attire.Medium large in size, the brooch is about 2 1/4" or 55 mm wide. The navettes are 13 mm long. One of the biggest down falls of brooches like this is the high mirror finish, over time, was susceptible to easily show scratches and dings. You will be pleased to know that this is not the case here as this brooch has been very well cared for and probably never worn. It is very difficult to find a D&E brooches made with cabs like these that are in exceptional condition. All of the navettes are perfect with no scratches, chips, cracks, or scuffs. In addition, the silver rhodium is in superb unworn condition; all of the silver rhodium prongs are perfect as well. The entire brooch is microscopically clean and bright and the back has the original fine working safety clasp.Comes gift wrapped and shipped in a new presentation jewelry box.
