It is a little-known fact that in the 1920s and 1930s, Japanese artists created some of the nicest Majolica wares ever made. Of course, they were copying styles of other countries, as they did with most everything they made. Finding exceptional pieces of Japanese Majolica wares today is very challenging. I have owned this handled vase for many decades and it has been in my hutch cabinet for over 30 years. I love the shape, the colors, and the textures.

The planter is ivory white ceramic with a sponged gloss black finish. A different Majolica decor is on both front and back; large sculpted flowers and leaves in relief. The colors are cobalt blue, deep cranberry, saddle gold brown, and light and dark green. The two large handles have an intentional crackled black glaze. Around the top rim the black band has a carved zigzag pattern.

Medium large in size, the vase is about 6" tall x 7" wide with handles or 14.5 cm x 17 cm. The entire vase is in excellent clean condition with no imperfections or flaws. There are no chips, cracks, scratches, or repairs. The interior and bottom has some light crazing as should be expected on ceramics this old. The bottom is stamped with an early unknown MIJ 1920-1930 mark.
