There is something fulfilling and endearing about baskets that are around 100 years old that have been lovingly used. I don't know exactly what it is except that maybe we don't expect something that looks so delicate to be so strong and endure the test of time so well. I like the fact that they are utilitarian and handled by many as opposed to other antiques that just sit on a shelf. 
 
There is an old man I know Ive spoken about in other auctions here. In Mountain City TN, he has a huge barn no one goes into but him. Hes close to 85 and every spring, he comes out with baskets just for me and surprises me to no end. He once said he would look  for the best ones he could find and I said no - that doesn't matter, I want the ones that look worn and used too. 
 
Last spring he surprised me with this big red oak buttocks with 100 years of barn dust. I knew it was a gem, so here it is. One of the most beautiful lovingly worn 1920s-1930s era Appalachian buttocks ever. 
 
She still has an nice deep reddish oak hues. Her handle is thick and strong and in perfect shape. All around, shes in very good shape with the exception of one small beauty flaw on her side and a couple of other small spots of wear.  
 
I visit antique malls all around the Appalachian region with my eye out for buttocks. They're very hard to find now and usually look like someone ran over them with a truck,yet prices are very steep even for ash or white oak. I'm offering this basket at a special price to those who love old buttocks like I do.  
 
In all her old glory, she measures about 12 1/2" long x 12" wide; About 9" tall with the handle and the basket is about 6" deep. Keep in mind, she is not white oak but red oak, and she is nicely narrow caned in depression era fashion. Just look at all her photos.
